As many as 11 club athletes chose to spend a large chunk of their August Bank Holiday at a breezy and jam-packed Central Park Arena, as the Dartford Harriers Open was held in conjunction with the Kent County U13 pentathlon championships and the Paddock Wood club championships. They competed in a total of 17 events. There was also significant Cambridge presence amongst the volunteer officiating team with club president, Christine Head-Rapson, Barry Ferguson, David Kitcher, Phil Pape and Mick Paul all helping out.
Cambridge highlights included huge PBs in the field for Katie Marsh and Kacey Walters in the Javelin throw and High Jump, respectively. Katie’s best throw of 29.91m is a new club record and puts her in 9th position in the UK rankings for her age group (64th last year) whilst Kacey’s leap of 1.62m, sees her national ranking shoot up to 16th in her age group and number 1 in the club for the season. There were also PBs for Natalie Mann in the shot (6.61m) and Steve Tredray in the 400m (55.30s) whilst Tim Carter sped to a season’s best in the 400m (64.89s)
Other Harriers competing were Sophie Fenner in the Hammer (32.72m), Mubarrak Salih over 100m (12.87s), Doug Lucas (400m – 65.39s) and Wole Odele (400m – 57.81s). Cerys Daniels also competed in the U13 pentathlon championships, winning a bronze medal with a tally of 1792 points. See Gill Barber’s report for more details of her performance.
