The scheme to build an indoor athletics facility at Sutcliffe Park took a giant step forward last week when Greenwich Council decided to increase their investment to enable the project to go ahead. The cost of the scheme, which will see an indoor athletics training hall, indoor climbing facility and indoor skate park built adjacent to the home straight, had risen from an original budget figure or £7.6 million to £12 million when the building tenders came in but the council agreed to meet the increased costs.
The timetable for the programme now sees building work commencing on site this autumn with an anticipated opening of spring 2018. There will be inevitable disruption to training at some point with the demolition of the existing club house and resurfacing of the track included in the plans but the long term future of the track and the sport in Greenwich has never been brighter
