There cannot have been many clubs with stronger representation at yesterday’s Paddock Wood Half Marathon. Eighteen runners of the twenty-five on the entry list ran.
It wasn’t the glorious spring day we had last year at this event. A lot more grey and drizzly, but pretty good running conditions with no real wind all the same. We took of advantage with at least five new PBs amongst the Cambridge runners.
There were a few stand out performances. Ben Shearer was first home for the club (…just!…I nearly caught him this time in the last mile, but he heard me approaching, was never going to let that happen and took off with 200m to go) in 10th place with 1.10.37. That performance earned Ben 1st place in the men’s V40 category, finishing over a minute up the second place V40 from Medway Park. And Peter Hadley was our other category winner on the day, finishing in 1.53.28 to take the men’s V70 1st place – again just over a minute on the second place runner in this category. Maria MacDonald ran 2.05.22 to finish 4th in the women’s V65 category.
In a reflection of the strength in numbers we had this race, Cambridge were 2nd in the men’s team event behind Kent AC – Ben, James and I were in a first team of first three to score. By my calculations, with the performances of Neb, Steve and Rob we had actually had two teams finish in the top 10 of that competition.
Great to see so many from the club out running at Paddock Wood, only after a similar turn out at the Big Half. Good luck to anybody now going on to run the London Marathon in two weeks time.
