Unfortunately, this will be a short report, as only five (one senior, and four u20s) club members travelled up to Bedford to compete in the Senior & u20 South of England Champs. These athletes were – Craig Lacy (Senior – Javelin), Brandon Mingeli (100m), Lara Atkinson (1500m), Luke Okosieme (HJ) and Daniel Falode (TJ).
Despite moving up an age group, Daniel comfortably won the Triple Jump with his best ever outdoor performance of 14.94m. This competition was also notable for him, as it was his first one off the 13m board (believe me it is a thing!). Especially considering in his first ever Triple Jump competition, just 11 months ago, he only cleared 12.47m!
Daniel was not the only medalist from the club – as Craig had his best throw since 2017 to claim the silver medal with 63.43m. Although, he was not pleased with his performance on the day, Luke only missed out on a bronze medal on count-back.
As is often the case with Bedford, conditions were very blustery over the two days. Whilst this is often a boon to sprinters, jumpers and throwers – this makes the venue unpopular with the middle-distance fraternity, as fast times are difficult to come by. Consequently Lara did well to just miss her season’s best with 4:49.91 in 7th place.
Despite, winning his heat comfortably in 10.72, into a stiff headwind – Brandon was unable to take his place for the semi-final. Which must have been frustrating for him, as this was the fastest time in qualification.
