South of England Junior indoor Championships

The club’s athletes made a big impression at this year’s championships claiming Two Gold, Two Silver and one Bronze medal between them and managed to set two new club records in the process. Nana Gyedu (pictured, with her coaches John Hillier and Peter Wishart – A rose between two thorns ?) continued her dominance of the UK Shot Put scene with a 15.36m throw which was 2.5m further that the second placed athlete. In the same event Abi Stewart finished just outside the medals with an 11.81m put despite spending most of her winter working on her hammer throwing. In the Triple Jump there was two silver medals and two club records to boot. Kasey Walters beat her own Under 15 Girls record with 10.48 whilst Daniel Falode showed the benefit of consistent training to beat Tosin Oke’s Under 17 boys record with a leap of 14.40 in the second round. For those who don’t know Tosin went on to become Commonwealth champion !

Kasey Walters continued her High Jumping where she left off last week with first time clearances up to 1.66m but couldn’t quite match her club record of 1.68m last week. She did however come away with a win and continues to top the UK rankings

On the track it was great to see tow of our under 15’s make the 800m final. Maddie Tynan ran a great race to win her heat in 2.26.72 but a second race and a scorching pace in the opening laps were a bit too much and she had to settle for 6th place in the final. Ethan Fiore ran a tactical heat to finish second and make the final and then had a great battle for second but despite a series of attempts just couldn’t get past the elbows of a Stevenage athlete and finished in the bronze medal position.

Overall a much better representation by the club compared to previous years and shows the progress out youngsters are making.
