The picturesque grounds of Polesdon Lacey, a National Trust property near Great Bookham in Surrey, hosted the South of Thames 5 miler for the second year in a row. The single lap course might not meet with the approval of cross country purists as some of it is run on stony trails but the long exhilarating descents and equally long lung-busting climbs give plenty of excitement. Those of us that had run it last year did at least know what to expect and had tried to keep something in reserve for the final steep climb up to the finish by the house.
In the South of Thames races we get to pit ourselves against a different set of runners from the more familiar faces in the Kent League; Kent AC and Belgrave Harriers were both well represented here with Belgrave taking the first two places and our Dean Lacy finishing 4th. Tarbo Fukazawa continued his good progress in his first English cross country season and had a good battle with the more experienced David Reader before eventually loosing out by 12 seconds. Christian Poulton completed the four to score team in which competition we were 8th.
