Road Running (Sun. 9th Mar.)

Most years two of our most popular early spring road races, used by many as part of their preparation for London or another marathon, are the Paddock Wood Half Marathon and the Lydd 20 miles, writes Clem Dixon. This year both were held on the same day so our strength was diluted.

Thirteen Harriers chose the fast flat Paddock Wood Half where Bobby Babaker finished just six seconds ahead of Ben Shearer: 23rd and 24th places in 1:11:50 and 1:11:56. Dave Worden broke the 75 minute barrier for the first time and Duncan Hope and Rob Shearer both squeezed in under 80 minutes. First of our women was Phoebe Cooper in 1:31:42.

Meanwhile we had six runners at the longer, and even flatter but somewhat more lowkey, Lydd 20. Twenty-four seconds separated James Macdonald and John O'Mahony in 3rd and 5th places, both winning their age categories, as did Anthony McGinty (M50) and Maria Macdonald (W65).

They do a half marathon too at Lydd and we had three runners taking this option: Emily Meins was 3rd female and 1st W35, Rose Baker 6th and 1st W60 and Chantelle McGinty 4th W40.

At the more high profile Cambridge Half Marathon there was a PB for Angus Vosper (1:16:48) with father Ali Vosper also running and happy to sneak in under the two hour mark.
