Olympic Games, Paris - Relay Silver for Daryll Neita

Daryll Neita rounded off a very successful Olympic Games in Paris anchoring the GBR women's 4 x 100m relay team to silver behind the USA. Earlier in the programme Daryll made the finals of the 100m and 200m where she had two agonisingly close medal misses. In the 100 she finished fourth in 10.96s a mere 0.04s behind USA's Melissa Jackson. In the 200m Daryll finished 5th, but again very close to the bronze with the proverbial blanket covering 3rd (22.20s) to 5th (22.23s) places.

SEAA U13/U15/U17 Championships + Race Walks, Walton-on-Thames (10/11 Aug.)

Club members set two new club records at a very warm and sunny Walton track over the weekend, writes Mick Bond. On the Saturday Nia Thomas broke one of the oldest of the Under 15 girls records on the books when she finished 4th in a very high quality 75m hurdles race (the winner had previously beaten the UK all time record in the heats). Her time of 11.40s beat Louise O’Callaghan’s record of 11.43s set in 1996. Ilyas Shah side-lined for most of the season with a broken foot sustained whilst playing rugby, ran just outside the club record for the Under 15 boys 300 in his heat then smashed it in the final with a winning time of  36.30s, beating Mubarrak Salih’s record by almost a second. Hopefully some more athletics and less rugby will enable him to go even faster!

There were gold medals for Lily Gayle in the under 17 women’s hurdles and Elijah Olaleye in the under 17 men’s 400 hurdles, whilst Under 13 Miya Cook had a busy weekend making the final of the 70m hurdles, finishing 5th in the shot and then winning the javelin with a throw of 32.06s just outside her PB. Zavier Brathwaite made the final of the Under 15 boys 100 with a PB of 11.48s and there was a silver medal for Hans Nmaju in the Under 17 men’s sprint hurdles and a bronze for Daniel Obike in the Under 17 men’s high jump.

In the track race walk championships held in conjunction, Hannah Hopper recorded a personal best over 5000m of 24:45.62s to win silver. Second claimer Luc Legon secured gold in the men's race with a seasons best of 21:55.17s.

Kent Young Athletes League, Central Park, Dartford (Sat. 10th Aug.)

On a glorious Saturday the U15 and U13’s were back in Central Park, Dartford. This time for the final Kent Young Athletic League of the season where we finished fifth overall in the league, and we will remain in Division 1 for next season.

Girls (Emily Yeatman): In the U13s we had Ukachi Onyemaechi and Louisa Ainley who made their debuts for the club and both put in strong performances. Ukachi ran the 150m (22.58s) and Louisa tried out discus (15.80m), shot (5.24m) and javelin (13.71m). There were PB's for Redeemed Nworah in the javelin (10.71m), Redemption Nworah in the 150m (21:62s), Amaiah Lopez-Teape in the 75m (10:56s) and long jump (3.13m) and in the 800m Esther Yeatman (2:41.43s).

The U15s also managed a clutch of PB’s and placed 2nd overall in this match behind Dartford, a fantastic way to end the KYAL. PB’s include the following: 100m Taraoluwa Adeeso (13.33s); javelin both Jadesola Adenle (14.90m) & Isabel Brand (17.24m). We had numerous girls competing in events for the first time - Eniola Sodeke in the 75mH (15:24s); Oluwabusola Fasuyi long jump (3.67m); Aisha Eletu high jump (1.15m).

The relay teams have performed strongly across all four matches – the  4 x 100 team have kept their winning streak securing 1st place in the last 3 matches and the 4 x 300 team have placed 3rd in all the matches. These results set the girls up brilliantly for the Kent Relay Championships that take place in September.  Both U13 and U15 girls have all done brilliantly over the season  - particular thanks to those who have given new events a try, and/or covered when there has been last minute injuries and ensuring we are able to secure as many points as possible for the team. Well done!

Boys (Mick Bond): A slimmed down team due to holidays and the clash with the South of England Championships saw the team finish 6th.
