Split Marathon, Croatia (Sun. 16th Feb.)
Those new to the marathon struggle with knowing what pace to target: go off too fast and it will all end badly, but show the distance too much respect and you won't reach your potential, reports Clem Dixon. I'm not new to it but after 18 months away where at first it seemed that I might not run again, let alone a marathon, it was as if I was. So here are some pointers: Half x 2.085, 10k x 4.6, 5k x 9.59. Also a chap called Yasso reckons that if you do a track session of 10 x 800, your average 800 time in minutes and seconds is your marathon potential in hours and minutes. These indicators only work if you have been doing the long runs in training (and I mean long!), but I had been and Yasso and parkrun were both signalling 3.30 so off I went, at least the sums are easy for that one: 8 minute miles, 5 minute kilometres. And it turned out about right, not quite a negative split (in Split!) but I hung on for 3:27:52 (88th and 2nd M60).

What of the marathon? low key but well organised. A rocky off road section through the ruins of the Roman city of Salona was a bit bonkers but a lap of the athletics track round the pitch in the Hajduk Split stadium was a nice touch.
