Last Friday of the Month 5k, Hyde Park (Fri. 27th Dec.)

Most people attending Hyde Park at this time of year normally expect Winter Wonderland to be the highlight of their visit, but for those visiting last Friday lunch time, reports James Macdonald, 240 scantily clad runners including ten from Cambridge Harriers will be Xmas memories that will live with them for a long-time

This was the last Friday of the month 5k at Hyde Park a well set up quick 2 lap race that has been going for over 30 years and is well worth taking part if you can escape work.

First Cambridge Harrier was James Macdonald in 15th running 16:51 closely followed by Jonathan Sargent 31st in 17:33. Our first lady home was Susan Dixon 22nd in 20:42, closely followed by Rose Baker 25th in 21:23

Other notable runners including multiple world age group record holder Clare Elms who had an age grade of 99.6% and someone that will be beating me next year an under 13 girl from Brentwood Beagles, Madison Kinder, who ran 17:22 for 5k! (Full results)

I’m aiming to run a few of these events next year, so hope to see many of you here in the New Year.

Cambridge Harriers Club 7.5 Mile Cross Country, Joydens Wood (Sat. 28th Dec.)

You have to go back to 2014 to find the last time that Danny Kendall ran in one of our Joydens Wood races, reports Clem Dixon. That year he won the 5 mile version, ten years later  he took on the 7.5 mile race, and he finished first again. Second and third were James Macdonald and David Worden and with Cambridge occupying all of the top six places there are good reasons to be optimistic for the club's senior men being among the team medals at the upcoming Kent Championships.

For the women Amelia Lawrence added the 7.5 mile title to the 5 mile that she took a couple of months earlier. She now holds all three trophies having won the 10 mile race at the end of last season. Second female was Hannah Sangan of Sevenoaks with Liz Brookes of CPA third. The silver and bronze medals for second and third Cambridge Harriers went to Christine Bond and Marian Hine. (Results)

Cambridge Harriers Indoor 60 Hurdles & Indoor 60 Flat, Sutcliffe Park (28/29th Dec.)

The weekend of 28th/29th December saw the first of our indoor 60m promotions on the indoor track at Sutcliffe. On the Saturday it was 60m hurdles and on the Sunday it was 60m flat, writes Mick Bond.

Entries were healthy at 74 for the hurdles (59 in equivalent fixture last year) and 154 for the flat 60 (up from 120 last year). There was also great representation from club athletes with 12 club hurdlers competing on the Saturday and 28 sprinters on the Sunday. There was good support from spectators especially for the Sunday sprints whilst both events were livestreamed on YouTube we had over 1,000 viewers on the Sunday.

Club athletes did well on both days with many having their first taste of indoor competition. In addition for many of the hurdlers this was their first chance to deal competitively with a change in heights and spacings where they had moved up an age group

Highlights across the weekend included Hans Nmaju’s 8.26s over the U17 men’s sticks to move him up to equal 5th in the UK rankings with Elijah Olaleye not far behind with a PB of 8.40s and Emily Cadman’s 7.82s for the 60 flat, for second fastest time on the day and only 1/100th outside her best from last winter.

Big thankyou to the 17 volunteer officials and organisers who made the meetings possible.

Other News - Club London Marathon Draw

For the 2025 TCS London Marathon the club received four places - one because the club marshalls the Green Start, one for staffing a feeding station and two as we have over 190 eligible members.

The draw for these places took place at the clubhouse after the club's 7.5 mile cross country. The lucky recipients were Jonathan Sargent, Joe Sheldrake, Paul Warricker and Clinton Lowe.
