Weekly Update - 23rd Oct. 2024

SEAA Cross Country Relays, Wormwood Scrubs (Sat. 19th Oct.)

Three intrepid teams of young athletes made the journey north of the river to contest the SEAA Cross Country Relay Championships (3 x 2k) at Wormwood Scrubs. Both the U13 and U15 (pictured below) girls teams finished 7th out of 27 and 35 teams respectively, with the U15 boys finishing 22nd from 41. The standard was high with teams travelling from across the south to participate.

U13G: 7th 25:39 (Lizzie Sanders 8:39, Esther Yeatman 8:39 & Seren Yeatman 8:22).

U15G: 7th 24:45 (Sophia Rose-Bonnar 8:18, Meredith Cummins 8:10 & Celia Yeatman 8:19).

U15B: 22nd 23:10 (Alex van den Berg-Hows 7:36, Monty Brown 7:57 & Austin Richards 7:39).

Cambridge Harriers Club 5 Cross Country, Joydens Wood (Sat. 19th Oct.)

Amelia Lawrence (U20) duly returned the trophy she won for this race a year ago to the clubhouse and she got to take it back home with her after taking more than a minute and a half off last year's time, taking her up to 6th in the all time results list, reports Clem Dixon. Last years winner Bobby Babaker also brought his trophy back to the clubhouse but his fortunes were rather different; he had decided not to race as he had a place in the Great South Run the following day, only for that to be cancelled! This left the field clear for Tom Brooke, second last year, to take the win, although Tom not only beat his own time from last year but Bobby's too so who knows what the result would have been?

Behind Tom, James Macdonald and Kyle Hurst made it a Cambridge 1-2-3, their positions being reversed from those at Foots Cray a week earlier. For the women Liz Brookes of CPA was second with Delilah Lester (U15) and Sophie Johnson (3rd and 4th) taking the silver and bronze medals as 2nd and 3rd Cambridge Harriers.

It was good to see one of our junior men having a crack at a senior race: Thomas Everson (U17) finishing in 20th place. It was also good to see four members running their first cross country races for the club: Joseph Wood (who only joined in the preceding week), Dingeman Wiertz (who was unattached when he ran here last year), Mike Taylor and Andrew Cowan will all be welcome additions to the ever growing and ever improving senior men's squad.

Earlier rain had left the course decidedly damp but by the time we got underway the sun was out. We had a healthy turn out of 65, a total which included 28 guest runners with our friends from Greenwich Tritons being particularly well represented. (Full results)

Yorkshire Marathon, York (Sun. 20th Oct.)

Huge congratulations to Rose Baker who achieved her goal of a hat-trick of England Masters qualifications at the Yorkshire Marathon on Sunday, where she finished second W60 in 3:26:40 well inside the 4:15:00 qualifying time. Rose will now represent England over the half-marathon in Swansea in June and 10k at the AJ Bell Great North 10k in July. The venue/date for the marathon has yet to be announced.

Rome Half-Marathon (Sun. 20th Oct.)

Four club members travelled to Rome for the Wizz Air Rome Half Marathon. Liam Carr was the first Harrier to finish as third U20 in 1:27:38. Julie Backley recorded a time of 1:33:41, Susan Dixon (2nd W55) 1:37:30 and Sally Carr 1:45:23.
