South of Thames CCA 7.5 Championships, Tonbridge (Sat. 21st Dec.)

In equine circles, “heavy” going is described as a real test of a racehorse’s stamina, and only a few horses relish this type of ground. Cut to the human equivalent in Tonbridge on Saturday, and nine keen Cambridge Harriers took on the challenge of a muddy South of the Thames Championship Race, writes Peter St-Amour.

Local team Tonbridge AC turned out with a team of twenty, Tunbridge Wells Harriers with thirty one male runners. Nevertheless, it was six to score that mattered in the quest to bring home the Sir Thomas Dewar Challenge Shield, and this year it wasn’t Cambridge who trotted the bog best. In fact Tonbridge AC gloried in home advantage taking six of the first ten male places and therefore the Shield.

Bobby Babaker led Cambridge home in 19th followed by James MacDonald (41st and third M40+), Ben Rew (55th), Mark Penny (71st), Peter St-Amour (96th), Graham Maynard (120th), James Floyd (122nd), Clem Dixon (133rd) and Robert Barns (140th). Belgrave Harriers took the female team victory with three of the top five places.

The race concluded shortly before the sun set on the shortest day, and on this year’s South of the Thames series.

At the time of the run it ranked Jim 3rd on the all time UK M40 list. The legendary Ron Hill was only 90 seconds quicker. Jim also ran the first ever London Marathon in 1981.
