Weekly Update - 31st July 2024

England Athletics U15/U17 Championships, Birmingham (26th-28th July)

Two week’s after the English Schools Championships it was back to Birmingham for our top juniors for the England Athletics Under 17 Championships. This event allows guests from outside England and so there was a healthy bunch of athletes from Scotland and Wales competing making it more like a British Championships

The club’s hurdlers excelled to come away with three silver medals and included two new club records by Elijah Olaleye in the 400 hurdles (54.97s) and Hans Nmaju (13.41s) in the 100m hurdles. Lily Gayle picked up the third of the silver medals in the 80m hurdles and was only 0.02 outside her own club record finishing in 11.48s.

Emily Cadman had a race schedule more akin to swimming than running as she negotiated three rounds of the 100m on Saturday and then three rounds of the 200 on Sunday. Raising her game in just about every race she ran a PB in the 100m final to join the exclusive 11 second club with a time of 11.98s for 5th and then PB’s in both the semi-final and final of the 200m to finish with 24.20s and a bronze medal.

On the field Michael Bridge set a huge PB of 47.45m in the discus for 5th place (previous PB 41.97m) and replicated his English Schools performance in the shot put finishing third with a best throw of 15.71s.

Emily, Elijah, Hans and Michael are all at the bottom of the under 17 age group and so have another year to improve!

British Masters Track & Field Championships, Derby (26th-28th July)

Whilst some of our younger athletes were in Birmingham for the England Athletics Age Group Championships some of our master athletes were fifty miles further north in Derby for the British Masters Championships.

It was double gold for our race walkers, both recording season bests for 3000m. Mark Culshaw (M55) 3rd overall in the mixed age group race in 18:31.18s with Mark Ashby (M60) a handful of seconds behind in 4th with 18:36.72s.

Ed Adigwe ran a season's best of 2:01.88s taking gold in the M45 800m.

Natalie Mann (W35) contested all of the throws events, securing a silver in the javelin with a best throw of 19.84m.

Wole Odele (M55) picked up the bronze in the 400m clocking 48.39s.

Woodford Green Open Graded Meeting, Ashton Playing Fields (Tue. 23rd July)

200m personal bests for U17s Immanuel Jegede (24.59s) and Raphael Akinbolu (25.88s), both winning their respective races.

BMC Regional Races, Tooting Bec (Wed. 24th July)

3000m: Holly Dixon ran a six second PB of 9:15.20s for third place in the women's race.

Kent Young Athletes League, Bromley (Sun. 28th July)

U13B (Sarah Ravenscroft): The U13 team was a bit diminished due to injury and the holiday season so we were delighted to welcome new member Josiah Tobi Awonuga (pictured) who had a brilliant debut in the 75m hurdles and 200m races at Norman Park. There were PB’s all round for our athletes, Zion Odele in the 100m and 200m, Rupert Scott in the 100m and 200m, Josiah in the 200m, Herbie Tobin and Callum Pattyson in 1500m, and Johnny Ravenscroft (currently injured so unable to run) who came 3rd in the hammer. We didn’t have enough of a team for the 4x100m, but this group are getting better and better at each competition.
