Weekly Update - 4th Sept. 2024

School Games National Final, Loughborough (Fri. 30th & Sat. 31st Aug.)

Congratulations to our athletes who competed at the 2024 National School Games over the weekend in Loughborough. Medal success for Elijah Olaleye, who claimed gold in the 400m hurdles in 56.28s with silvers for Emily Cadman (200m - 24.66s) and Lily Gayle (80mH - 11.74s).

Vets AC & London Masters Open T & F Championships, Tooting (Sat. 31st Aug.)

Having established inaugural W40 club records for hammer (32.02m) and shot (7.03m) at the Tonbridge AC Open on August Bank Holiday, Natalie Mann improved her shot record to 7.69m and added over four metres to the W40 javelin club record with a throw of 20.52m.

The Big Half, London (Sun. 1st Sept.)

Over 30 of the Club's road runners took on the Big Half this year (Tower Bridge to Canary Wharf, back to Tower Bridge and then finishing at the Cutty Sark), writes Clem Dixon. Bobby Babaker was our first finisher in a fantastic 6th place (1:09:20), he had Olympian Eilish McColgan for company most of the way round!

The lower age limit here is 17 which Amelia Lawrence took advantage of: our first female finisher in 1:36:04 and winner of the junior age category. The Club's older women also did us proud with three more high age group places: Sue Dixon (1:36:52) 3rd W55, Rose Baker (1:42:22) 4th W60 and Maria Macdonald (2:27:45) 3rd W70. All Cambridge Harriers results can be viewed here:

Medway & Maidstone AC Graded Open Meeting, Gillingham (Sun. 1st Sept.)

Natalie Mann improved on her W40 hammer club record with a throw of 32.73m. Immanuel Jegede recorded a 400m personal best of 52.61s.

Dragons Back Race, Wales - Christian Poulton (Mon. 2nd to Sat. 7th Sept.)

The Dragon's Back is a six day stage race stretching the length of Wales, 236 miles from Conwy Castle on the North coast to Cardiff Castle on the South, reports Clem Dixon. That's an average distance of nearly 40 miles per day and with 16,400 metres of ascent (more than twice the height of Everest!) it is no wonder that the dropout rate is high. Day one throws everything that Northern Snowdonia has got at you including Tryvan and Crib Goch that many struggle to describe as walkable let alone runnable.

Christian finished that stage in 14 hours in 160th place. 10 hours later and he was on his way again for stage 2; as we go to press his GPS tracker shows him to be somewhere between Rhinog Fawr and Rhinog Fach with 20kms of the stage to go. Tune in next week for the finale or follow his progress here (No 254) https://live.opentracking.com/dragonsbackrace2024/
