Cambridge Harriers Club 10 Mile Cross Country, Joydens Wood (Sat. 1st Feb.)
Amelia Lawrence made it a clean sweep for the season adding the 10 mile title to the 5 and 7.5 she won in October and December, writes Clem Dixon. Charlotte Broyd, one of many guests from Greenwich Tritons, was second lady with Christine Bond third taking the silver medal as second Cambridge Harrier with Emma Brown taking bronze.
For the men Jonathan Sargent ensured that a new name would be added to the one hundred year old silver trophy that is awarded at this event. Gavin Hows was second, a Cambridge Harrier in the distant past but currently unattached (something that we will need to sort out!). Frequent visitors Stuart Waterman (Dartford Harriers) and Simon Wells (Bexley) were third and fourth with Cambridge Harriers Mark Penny and Peter St-Amour fifth and sixth taking the minor medals in the club championship.
Recent rain contributed to a muddy course but the fallen tree that has been a feature for the past two years has at last been removed, perhaps the new charges that the Woodlands Trust are levying on us are being put to some use.
SEAA Indoor Championships (Seniors/U20), Lee Valley (Sat. 1st & Sun. 2nd Feb.)
Not the biggest of entries from club members but those who did compete did well, reports Mick Bond. Keziah Olaleye, set a great PB of 58.44s to win her heat in the U20W 400m and then bettered it in the final with a 57.88s clocking to take silver. New member Jack Jones just missed out on a medal in the U20 long jump securing 4th place with a 6.48m leap. Doyin Aderinto set a season’s best of 7.77s in the final of the women’s 60m whilst Lily Gayle was just outside her best clocking 9.10s in the final of the U20 women’s 60 hurdles.
Murcia Marathon, Murcia, Spain (Sun. 2nd Feb.)
Sick of the darkness and cold, three brave Cambridge Harriers searched for warmth and light in Murcia and whilst there took part in the Murcia Marathon, writes James Macdonald.
Ben Shearer was first home in 2:33:20, closely followed by James Macdonald in 2:33:47. Rob Shearer had a great run with 2:57:15. The three brave Harriers formed a team with Dartford Harrier Chris Biddle and took home the men’s team trophy finishing just 50 seconds clear of local team Rajaos Runners.
If you are after a little winter sun and a race that has a 10k, half and full marathon then Murcia is a great option. Marathon runners for the past two years have also received a jacket pictured below which I am sure you would agree looks rather swanky.
