Borrowdale Fell Race, Rosthwaite (Sat. 3rd Aug.)

The Borrowdale Fell Race is one of the "classic" Lakeland fell races, starting and finishing in Rosthwaite, the route initially heads over Bessyboot before climbing England's highest summit, Scafell Pike. Great Gable is then scaled before a descent to Honister Pass and a final climb up Dale Head. The distance is approximately 17 miles (27 kilometres) and the route has around 6,500 feet (2,000 metres) of ascent.

Although a firm fixture in the club’s fell running calendar, only I made it up to the lakes this year, writes Christian Poulton.

Considering the recent amount of rain that we have experienced this summer, the weather was fairly good with dry conditions, light winds and largely cloud free summits, at least on the lower levels.

Although the conditions on the day were good, the ground underfoot was quite wet with no abatement to the boggy areas that we had to traverse. The climb up to Betsy Boot was as steep and lung busting as ever but at least the run over to Check Point 2, Esk Hause Shelter was cloud free so we could see where we were going. Dodging walkers, we climbed up Scarfell Pike and then a sharp right to descend via the scree of the Corridor route. The scree this year was saturated and made an already difficult descent even harder. Most runners ended up partly running / sliding down 50% on their legs and 50% on their bottoms.

Up and over Great Gable, I took a miss-step skirting the summit of Green Gable, slipping on a wet rock and rolled my right ankle slightly. From then onwards I had to unfortunately slow jog / walk to Honister Hause, up to Dale Head summit and then the steep decent back to the finish. A slight navigational mishap on the decent off Dale Head added to my slowest time ever however, I was still comfortably within the race cut-offs.

Result: 188th Christian Poulton 5:14:59 (49th M50).

Derek Crookes U13 Inter Counties, Walton-on-Thames (Sun. 4th Aug.)
